Rank is the amount of pivot columns of an RREFed matrix. Equivalently, it’s the dimensions of the column space, of the row space.

Properties

Where A is a consistent matrix of size n * m

• If rank(A) < n → at least one free variable → infinitely many solutions
• if rank(A)= n → no free variables → one solution
